Brown’s
Destination Imagination Teams Perform Well at Denver Tournament
3rd-5th Grade Team
Advances to State Brown
International sent three teams to the local Destination Imagination (DI)
Tournament on March 14. The event was such a success that Brown’s
parent organizers are already making plans to offer this program again next
year.
DI
is an exciting team-building, mind-bending experience that teaches critical and
creative thinking skills to kids from kindergarten through university age. In
the after-school program at Brown, DI kids were grouped by age and designed
their own skit performances, which came to life at the tournament held at
George Washington High School.
Brown
was the only elementary school from NW Denver represented at the tournament, and
Brown’s teams were the first to participate in DI since our school’s
revitalization in 2005. With these “firsts,” the pressure was on for our
students to do well.
Our
two non-competitive Rising Star Teams – the Flaming Weirdos and the Super Smart
Thunderstorms (Kindergarten through 2nd grade) performed with
confidence and enthusiasm. The Flaming Weirdos performed a scary skit with
ghosts and trick-or-treaters that had the audience sitting on the edges of
their seats. The Super Smart Thunderstorms raised the audience’s awareness of
our oceans’ plight with a performance that showed how people can work together
to clean up pollution.

Our
3rd-5th grade team, Brown’s Great Wall, performed at the
competitive level. The team participated in the Operation Cooperation
Challenge, creating some innovative manned and un-manned machines to build the
Great Wall of China. This team, in its first-ever competition, won third place
and is now headed on to the state tournament in April!

We
are thankful to the many parents who volunteered their time after school to
support our teams. In particular, we are grateful to our three team managers
Robert Ham, Holly Denton and Karen Sorensen for their unfailing commitment to
making DI a success.
If
you’re interested in volunteering next year, please contact Pamela Davis at 303-345-8534 or pameladavis@technifocus.net. In
the meantime, wish our Brown’s Great Wall team members luck as they prepare to
compete in the state tournament. Curious about DI?
