About Brown International Academy
At
Brown, we foster the growth of internationally minded people and create
positive attitudes about learning. As an authorized International
Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, our curriculum focuses on the
development of the whole child—in the classroom and in the world
outside. By exploring themes of global significance melded with the
Colorado State education standards, we deliver a strong academic core
curriculum, while providing room for children to learn and grow in a
nurturing environment.
- Our award-winning
leadership team and teaching staff are dedicated to creating fun,
engaging learning experiences every day. Just ask the kids!
- Spanish language instruction combines with art, music, dance and library technology for a complete intercultural program.
- We offer a Kaleidoscope Corner program for before-and-after school childcare, as well as a number of other after-school programs ranging from Destination Imagination, sports club, Spanish, math wizards and others.
- Our parent-teacher organization and bilingual parent advisory committee organize fundraisers and create community outreach. Come get involved!
Brief History Brown Elementary School opened its doors in 1952. It was named for Edward L. Brown, who served the Denver Public Schools from 1898 to 1931 as a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent.
In 2003, Brown was selected for revitalization, and a committee of teachers, parents and community members researched several different curricular programs. They ultimately chose to implement the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme, and the school became known as Brown International Academy.
In the spring of 2005, many new staff members were hired, including a new principal, Suzanne Loughran. Most of the staff have participated in a training workshop at Princeton University in order to learn about implementing the IB Primary Years Programme.
In early 2007, Brown was honored to be named a Beacon School, in which teachers commit to support a specific school-wide education plan that is intended to encourage innovation and reform.
In January 2009, Brown proudly announced that it had earned its IB World School status after a multi-year certification process. As an IB World School, Brown is officially authorized to teach the IB Primary Years Programme curriculum. Brown is one of fewer than 500 schools worldwide to have achieved this extraordinary milestone.
