The Kindergarten Experience

question3:

Welcome Kindergarten Families!

For many of you, this is a first experience with Brown International Academy, and perhaps with any school for your child. Below is some information you might find helpful as we begin the school year. If you have any questions about this information, please feel free to call the front office staff at 303-477-1611 or your child’s teacher. Also seek out other parents and attend PTO meetings to remain informed.

Drop-off and Pick-up

Kindergarteners are dropped off and picked up at the kindergarten classroom doors that lead to the kindergarten playground on the school’s south side (rooms 108 and 109), or at the east door on the main playground (room 107). Kindergarteners should not arrive before 8:45am unless accompanied by an adult. If your child participates in the breakfast program, he or she should arrive at 8:30 and enter the cafeteria through the entrance on the playground. If it is a bad weather day, you may bring your child into school through the west entrance rather than wait on the playground.

Classroom Schedule

Your child’s teacher will describe the classroom schedule on Back to School Night. Kindergarten classes have a mix of group and exploration time in the morning, with the possibility of outside play. They go to lunch around 11:30, followed by recess. Afternoons for full-day students involve Specials, which include Gym/Dance, Music, Visual Arts and Library/Technology on a four-week rotation basis. Spanish classes are held one class period per week throughout the school year. If you have specific questions, feel free to talk directly to your child’s teacher.

Lunch

Walking to the cafeteria and buying lunch is a new experience for our kindergarteners. As a result, Brown staff ensure that children quickly learn the routine. Classes line up and walk to the lunchroom together, where those who brought their own lunch go to sit at a table, and those buying “hot” lunch are helped through the lunch line by the paraprofessional.

Lunches cost $1.40 (full price) or 40 cents (reduced fee). You may pre-pay for multiple lunches via MyLunchMoney.com, or give cash or a check to the cafeteria staff. Remember to sign up online before the first day of school, or pay staff on the first day when you drop off your child. Your child will have a lunch card in the classroom that he or she will give to the cafeteria staff; the paraprofessional will return all lunch cards to the classroom. Children with free or reduced lunch will have a lunch card that works the same way. You may read the lunch menu at foodservices.dpsk12.org/menus or in the menu distributed monthly by Brown.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms for rooms 108 and 109 sit between the two classrooms and students can access them from their classrooms. Room 107 uses the bathrooms directly across the hall. Your child should be able to take care of him/herself in the bathroom without adult assistance.

School Information and Updates

The school and the PTO regularly produce newsletters packed with information. Students receive these and other informational flyers in their take home folder at the end of each week. Please encourage your child to bring this information home to you and to return the folder to the teacher on Monday.

Before- and After-School Programs

Kaleidoscope Corner is available before school from 6:30-9:00 and after school from 3:45-6:00. Kaleidoscope staff drop off and pick up the children from their classrooms. Kids typically spend their time working on projects in the cafeteria and playing in the gym or on the playground. More information on Kaleidoscope can be found at kaleidoscope.dpsk12.org/.

Depending on parent volunteer interest and funding, Brown makes available an array of before- and after-school programs. To volunteer, please return the Brown Volunteer Opportunities packet to the front office.
