Chain Reaction
| “Chain Reaction” is a large mural on the school playground painted by the
students of Brown International Academy’s mural club. It is the final product of
a yearlong partnership between the elementary school and Temple Sinai, a
synagogue in Southeast Denver. |
| | The name of the mural comes from one of the
Units of Inquiry in Brown's International Baccalaureate curriculum and is
descriptive of the process used to create the mural. First, the students
brainstormed different types of chain reactions that occur in the natural world,
then made detailed sketches, which finally resulted in a large composition
incorporating the various student generated ideas. | | | Some of the “chain reaction”
themes that can be found in the mural are: the sun, the changing of seasons, a
tree’s growth, the phases of the moon, water and the tide, insects, plants, and
fruit. | | | The mural was painted under the direction of Brown International
Academy’s art teacher Barth Quenzer. Linda Stein, Max Frieder, and Amanda
Borow, volunteers from Temple Sinai, gave their time and energy to assist the
project. Paint and brushes were donated by Jim Diner, of ProCoat Systems. | | The
mural is a beautiful addition to the school grounds, and will be a colorful
reminder in the coming years of the partnership between Brown International
Academy and the community.
