As a result of a partnership between Denver Public Schools and the American Indian
community, Brown International Academy
is proud to be a location for the American Indian Focus Schools Program, whose
purpose is to improve the education of all children. The program
centralizes the enrollment of American Indian students in a select number of
schools throughout Denver. Approximately
1,100 Native American students are enrolled in the DPS school system. At Brown,
Native Americans represent about 10 percent of the student body.
Jennifer Wolf, a parent whose child attends Brown, is a
Native American resident of the northwest Denver
neighborhood. “While growing up on the reservation, my family went to Pow Wows
sometimes every weekend, all over the country. I was raised with a deep
sense of pride for my Native American culture and was a shawl dancer. This
is a pride I have emphasized in my children from the time they were newborns
swaddled in their traditional cradle boards wearing baby moccasins. How
very special it is that we have a school that respects and explores ideas from
cultures around the globe,” Wolf said. More information
about the traditions and history of Pow Wows may be found at www.powwows.com.
