World Cultures Are Focal Point
of Public School’s Fundraising Event
April
17, 2008 – Denver, Colo. – Brown International Academy,
a Denver Public
School located in northwest Denver, will hold its second annual
International Spring Festival on May 1, 2008. The event will be a joint
fundraiser and community building opportunity that embodies the international
spirit of the school and its students. The indoor/outdoor festivity will combine
opportunities for the elementary school children to learn about other cultures
from around the world while enjoying festival games, foods and performances
with their families.
Included in the day’s agenda will be a
unique display of culture featuring the Mizel Museum and its Bridges of
Understanding traveling exhibit, and Denver Sister Cities International’s
volunteer-driven traveling exhibits illustrating the cities of Chennai, India;
Axum, Ethiopia; Kunming, China; and Potenza, Italy. Children will be encouraged
to view photos, costumes, flags, coins, art objects, maps, amulets and many
other treasures from around the world. This event will take place in the school
cafeteria from 1:30-5:00pm.
The outdoor portion of the festival will
be the school’s largest fundraiser of the year. It will feature
activities, games and foods representing the traditions and cultures from a
variety of countries around the globe, as well as entertainment by local
musicians. The fundraiser will take place on the playground from 4:00-6:30pm. May 1 is May Day, which refers to any
of several holidays throughout Western Europe and the United States.
The holiday has ancient origins, and various customs surrounding the time
period have survived into modern times – ranging from feasts, parades and
community gatherings to dances around May Poles and the giving of May Baskets. Brown International Academy has selected May
1 as the date of its International Spring Festival in recognition of this
popular holiday. Event
