The mission of the Brown International Academy PTA is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people by engaging our local community, families and educators in advocating for all children.

We do this through district/legislative action, supporting social and intercultural enrichment activities, and fundraising to improve educational opportunities and operational support in continuously building a stronger Brown International community.

Everyone is welcome to attend PTA meetings, whether you are a member or not! We hope everyone in our community will consider membership. The PTA meets monthly during the school year at 6pm MT, the second Thursday of every month. The PTA met virtually during zoom during the 2020-21 school year and will continue to do so in Fall 2021. Meeting details can be found on the school calendar.

Parent Equity Committee

The Equity Committee’s Mission Statement

The Parent Equity Committee was created to help build a more inclusive school for all children, regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, or ability. We are working to ensure that Brown International and the students we serve are safe, represented, and advocated for as they grow into citizens of a global community.

Collaborative School Committee

Each Denver Public School has a Collaborative School Committee (CSC) with representation from parents, community, faculty, administrators, and classified staff. The purpose and scope of the CSC is to enhance student achievement and school climate by engaging the school community in collaborative efforts supporting the school and District’s goals. The CSC provides strategic direction in support of the school’s mission and vision as stated in the Unified Improvement Plan (UIP). These are district- established indicators of individual school performance and data in the following areas: Attendance, graduation-rate (more high school than elementary), school leadership, instructional quality, student respect, school safety and other measures such as the School Accountability Rating.

The Committee consists of school parents, volunteers, teachers, classified staff, community business owner, and the principal.

  • Do I have to come to the meetings to be a member?
    No. But we hope you will!
  • Can I bring my kids to the meeting?
    Childcare is provided at every PTA meeting by local high school sports teams. Your kids will have a blast playing in the gym with their friends and the older kids!
  • Do I have to volunteer at school or fundraising events to be a member?
    No. However, there are lots of opportunities to volunteer with PTA that require a minimal time commitment. Like an hour or less.
  • If I join, can my spouse or partner vote too?
    Memberships are individual. Your spouse or partner is welcome to join too!
  • Can students join PTA?
  • Can I come to the meetings even if I don’t join?
    Everyone is welcome at the meetings. However, only members may vote.

Elementary school offers kids many great chances to make friends and have fun as they are learning and exploring new and important subjects. As parents, we should all take advantage of the opportunity to get involved in our children’s schooling. By committing our time and energy through volunteer activities in the classroom, at school events and in other ways, we can improve the quality of our children’s education by leaps and bounds.

To volunteer in the school or classrooms during the school day, you must first complete this background check form and submit it to the front office.

The PTA also hosts a number of events throughout the year that parents can volunteer for. A full event calendar is available, and includes several major fundraisers for Brown.

We will take any help we can get, and volunteering commitments are generally small blocks of time and can consist of: Helping with setup, selling tickets, running booths/tables, helping with tear down. To volunteer, please identify the event you are interested in and contact the event chair, use the volunteer sign up sheet listed; or contact the Brown PTA volunteer coordinator.

Watch Dogs: Recess Ranger Program

Are you looking for a place to plug in at Brown? Wanting to do something positive for lots of students and have fun at the same time? Then Recess Rangers may be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you.

Rangers volunteer on the playground during recess at lunch (approximately 12:10 to 1:25 p.m.) with 1st through 5th graders to be a positive presence on the playground and to engage students in physical activity. Some of the goals for the the Recess Ranger Program:

  • RECHARGE: Increase student participation in physical activity so that they recharge their brains and are ready to focus when class resumes
  • REFRESH: Introduce new organized games or activities to increase students’ interest in active play
  • RECONNECT: Increase the presence of positive adults to whom students can communicate needs or problems.
Literacy Committee

Purpose: The purpose of the committee is to educate, advocate and support teachers, students, and parents on issues surrounding literacy. This includes and embraces current Brown International library activities and wishes.

Goal: Our goal is to promote an enriched environment through parent, teacher, administrative and student support where all types of learners can enhance their strengths and express their creative minds as confident learners.

Friday Book Cart: We will be back! Friday Book Cart gives over 2,000 books to Brown International learners. ALL Brown International students are encouraged to come to the book cart, Fridays, on the playground, after school, to find a FREE book to take home. The books are for students to take, read, share, return or keep forever. Brown’s Literacy Committee believes every student deserves the opportunity to find their forever book, if not, something for the weekend. Regardless, promoting literacy starts with having a book in hand unconditionally. The books have been donated by Brown families and friends. We send a huge shout out to all our donors. THANK YOU! This endeavor is nothing without your contribution.

Donating books – If you have books to donate please drop the books into the donation box at the front office or contact Emily Ceccanti at to coordinate.

Books & Bagels: We will be back! Books and Bagels is an opportunity for your student to invite family into their classroom to share their classroom books and reading skills. A light breakfast of bagels, cream cheese and juice is served while you and your reader peruse classroom reading selection, choose their favorite classroom book and read. Books and Bagels is held on the 4th Friday, a rotating basis for each grade. This is a before school event starting at 8:30 to morning bell. 

PTA generously fulfilled the Literacy Committee’s request to fund  teachers to attend a 40 hour summer Orton Gillingham literacy training. We are very excited to experience the multi-sensory methods of learning they bring back to our classrooms.

Wellness Committee

Brown’s Wellness Committee’s mission is to promote wellness for students, staff and the community. Areas of focus have been on physical wellness as well as environmental wellness.

Past projects:

  • The first salad bar in a DPS cafeteria
  • Healthy cooking demonstrations, nutrition student assemblies and cooking classes
  • Teacher tips for non-food classroom rewards and incentives
  • One of the first schools in DPS to implement recycling and composting bins
  • School & Community Garden and student-run farmers markets

Current Projects:

  • Educating students and parents about healthy food choices (see Healthy Snacks and Healthy Celebrations resources)
  • Promoting allergy-awareness
  • Promoting physical activity at recess through volunteer Recess Rangers and special events such as Field Day, and the MileHigh5 Race.
  • Promoting biking and walking to school, esp. on National Bike to School and National Walk to School Days, as well as Earth Day.
  • Identifying ways of improving our water fountains and hand-washing facilities and practices.
  • Educating & monitoring recycling and composting at all Brown events
  • Supporting the School and Community Garden through fall and spring workdays and special dine-out at Chipotle.

For 2014-15, the PTA has set aside $2,500 for wellness-related funding requests. The Wellness Committee is currently researching possible projects in this area. If you have other ideas and/or are interested in helping the Wellness Committee, please contact

Stuck for Snacks?

Most classrooms at Brown take a snack break for students to fuel their bodies and brains between meals. Whether your classroom shares a group snack, or you pack something extra in their lunch, consider providing a nutritious food that is high in protein, fiber, and vitamins, and is low in sugar, salt and trans-fats. Because classrooms and desks are sometimes shared, please make sure the snack doesn’t contain common allergens like nuts. Stuck for ideas? Here are a few suggestions of healthy snacks compiled by the Brown PTA Wellness Committee and school nurse, Kristina Polizotto:

  • Applesauce (unsweetened)
  • Apple or pear wedges sprinkled with cinnamon or served with yogurt dip
  • Avocado chunks or half an avocado sprinkled with lime juice or lemon pepper
  • Carrot sticks or celery with cream cheese & raisins
  • Cereal or Granola (low-sugar, high fiber brand. NO NUTS)
  • Cheese sticks or cheese cubes
  • Cinnamon or raisin toast with cream cheese
  • Cottage cheese with canned fruit (w/o sugar)
  • Dried fruit (apricots, banana chips, figs, prunes, raisins, mango etc.)
  • Eggrolls, spring rolls or pot stickers (NO PEANUT SAUCE)
  • Fresh Fruit (apples, bananas, blueberries, tangerines, mangos, oranges etc.)
  • Hardboiled eggs
  • Graham Crackers w/cream cheese
  • Jerky (turkey or beef -check for artificial ingredients, sugar and salt levels)
  • Muffins – whole grain (NO NUTS)
  • Mixed fruit snack cups (w/o sugar)
  • Popcorn, Pretzels or other Snack Mix (NO NUTS)
  • Quesadillas (try whole-grain or corn tortillas)
  • Tortilla Chips (plain) with salsa, guacamole, or low-fat bean dip
  • Veggies (carrots, red peppers, snap peas) w/hummus, or salad dressing
  • Whole Grain crackers (like Triscuits) with hummus or cheese
  • Yogurt (try low-sugar varieties or add your own fruit)
  • Need more ideas?

Classroom time is precious! Therefore it is encouraged to celebrate your child’s birthday outside of the classroom. Please check with your child’s teacher to discuss how they would prefer to celebrate birthdays, and how it would least likely interrupt classroom learning.
